Modern Odyssey

3-year volunteering project in eco and urban communities (Volunteering Team)

An incredible seven-week journey through six eco and urban communities in South Greece. Our 17 people team will travel together in vans, embracing the backpacking spirit while creating a tight-knit community along the way.

Beyond the achievements, this project fostered friendships, personal growth, and a deeper understanding of sustainability through cultural exchange and teamwork.

Hop on the van, let’s go!

Destination 2: Yamochori

We successfully created a new drystone path at the entrance of Yamochori, learning and practicing this traditional building technique under the guidance of Alexandros. We collected and upcycled stones from the mountain and an old destroyed house, joined a workshop on the history and techniques of drystone construction, and then worked together to build the path step by step, stone by stone.

Destination 3: Monastery

We continued working with drystone techniques by rebuilding the path leading to the traditional nerotrivi and repairing a drystone wall. We also learned how to create raised garden beds with Holly, helping build a more self-sustainable garden through digging, collecting wood and straw, and preparing the soil. At the same time, we prepared the nerotrivi area for its opening celebration by cleaning the path, creating steps from tree trunks, and taking care of the surrounding space.

Destination 4: Hopeland

We completed the final stage of the greenhouse construction by preparing the space, building drystone steps, creating the plaster mixture, and applying the final outer layer to the walls and rooftop. We also spent time in the garden, taking care of trees and vegetables, collecting eucalyptus leaves for mulch, and watering the plants using the donut method. Alongside the work, we enjoyed life in Hopeland through beach sunsets, yoga sessions, silent discos, local community visits, and traditional celebrations.

Destination 5: Nisi Raches

We supported the construction of the future Wheeling 2 Help farm by helping with woodwork for the main building and taking care of the olive trees. Together with other volunteers, we also cleaned the Vellas river, collecting more than 70 bags of trash. Alongside the work, we shared community activities, games, yoga sessions, and an open event presenting our Modern Odyssey journey.
