Modern Odyssey | Volunteering Team
Week 6 – NISI Raches / Wheeling2Help : Building from Scratch
Have you ever built something from scratch? Well, our Modern Odyssey volunteers did! In their final location, Nisi, where they were hosted by the NGO Wheeling2Help, they got the opportunity to build a compost toilet from zero and see it completed and ready for use.
Hosted by Wheeling2Help, a NGO headquartered in Nisi, which organizes community-developing volunteering projects around the world, our volunteers contributed to the expansion of the eco-project in a nearby olive trees field, starting from the most important foundation: compost toilets! Guided by Helpis, founder of Nisi and Wheeling2Help, and Alex, whom they had already met in Yamochori, his eco-community, the team cooperated in cutting wood, painting, digging and assembling. They learnt the vital importance of teamwork in completing a task within a set deadline, and felt an immense sense of gratitude at seeing their work coming to life from scratch. In the meantime, the marketing team also saw the completion of a challenging task which they had been working on ever since the start of Modern Odyssey: a documentary telling the story of this Odyssey and its participants. This documentary was then shown to the participants, to the staff of Nisi, its volunteers, and some guests, who got to know more about this project and the people involved.
Our team also got the chance to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Raches, with its beaches and quiet atmosphere, cycling around and watching the sunset on stand up paddles. They also got to learn more about Wheeling2Help, and discovered some practicals of working in an NGO, thanks to an informative workshop on fundraising and a presentation on the story of Wheeling2Help and Nisi.
With the end of the week in Nisi, it also came the end of the project… or maybe not? Stay tuned to discover what our volunteers did in their very last days of Modern Odyssey and don’t forget to like and share our posts.
