Week 4 – Fourth location: Fabric Republic
After 3 weeks immersed in nature, the Modern Odyssey team has reached a new and unique destination for the next few days. Located in the hustle and bustle of the Greek capital, Athens’ Fabric Republic is the fourth location of their project. Fabric Republic is a non-profit organization consisting in an innovative and comprehensive clothing management system that focuses on today’s social needs and human rights, addressing sustainability and sustainable development. The NGO is based on Directive 2008/98/EC of the European Parliament and Council of the EU concerning waste and the transition to a European recycling and fully sustainable society. Fabric Republic collects used clothes from bins located in the selected hotspots in Athens and beyond, sorts, cleans, and classifies them before their distribution to solidarity organizations and to those in need. In the last five years, Fabric Republic and its network have collaborated to provide clothes to the victims of the earthquake in Evia, to refugees coming to Greece, and to many others in challenging and difficult situations.
Fabric Republic’s goal and vision is the development of social and ecological consciousness among people to achieve a Zero Waste reality. By involving volunteers from all around the world and participating in international projects, the NGO is gradually moving in this direction and spreading awareness on recycling practices and waste management.
