Week 6 – Celebration
Week 6 started with the final touches on the Women’s Center. We divided into gardening, painting, and in-house teams. The gardening team prepared the garden and planted seeds and plants. The in-house team painted the walls cream and decorated the outside with stones. The painting team completed a mural representing a traditional Dara’ang woman in the clouds.
This week was also our last bus ride to the village. We had the chance to look at everything we had created with our own hands. To end the day, we went one last time to get ice cream at the local shop.
At Makhampom, we celebrated our coordinator Golf’s birthday with cake and candles. We learned how to create cyanotypes using sunlight, made a zine collage about our time in the project, and took part in a mini UN simulation.
The week reached its peak on Friday when we celebrated the inauguration of the Women’s Center. We exchanged dishes—tzatziki from Greece, tiramisù from Italy, and Haitian rice—and enjoyed ice cream and local Dara’ang dishes. We danced to traditional Thai music with the community, played games with the villagers, and received blessings from the locals, who tied white strings around our wrists. At the end, they gifted us their tungs to take home—a memory that will stay with us.
